Thomas Prince School
Princeton, MA 1996
The Thomas Prince School is a public school (K-8) located in a rural agricultural community in central Massachusetts. The courtyard was designed to provide a landscape composition which can be viewed from the adjacent corridors and classrooms. The yard is used as an outdoor setting for small instruction groups. The design references the local cultural and natural landscape through a series of archetypal elements: a forest edge, a remnant stone wall, a riparian corridor, a successional field, and a vine structure modeled on indigenous American Indian huts. The project remains at the heart of the School’s play and learning curriculum.
