Happy Holidays

The SSA team celebrated the holiday season with our annual Charbrook Party. It was an evening of delicious food, tasty drinks, and the coveted Yankee Swap. It was by no means a silent night, but one of festive conversation, storytelling, and laughter. We at SSA hope you all had a wonderful holiday and wish you a healthy and happy New Year.

NOVEMBER 2015

ASLA and ABX Presentations

SSA was proud to have two of our Principals participate in Conference presentations in November. Joe Wahler presented with Simon Prunty and P. Clifford Miller at the ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo in Chicago on the designed plant communities from the perspective of eco-modelling native communities to embrace spontaneous species. Lauren Stimson presented with Tom Chung, Emma Houiellebecq and Alexander Schreyer at the Architecture Boston Expo on the iterative and holistic design process used to bridge across disciplines to create a living demonstration of design integration, specifically referencing the UMass Amherst Integrated Design Building. Congrats to both on successful and informative sessions.

OCTOBER 2015

American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2015 Awards

SSA is thrilled to receive an ASLA Honor Award for <a href="http://www.philhardbergerpark.org/"target="_blank">Phil Hardberger Park.

The 2015 jury wrote that “the landscape architect bridges the formal and romantic parts of the park and embraces both. There is a place for everyone.”

The concept for Hardberger Park is cultivated wild. Over the last seven years, this Park has become an integration of the rich cultural history of San Antonio, blended with the diverse and resilient ecologies that are native to the region. The Park dedicates 75% of the 311 acre site to preservation and restoration of this native landscape while seamlessly embedding 25% as low-impact recreation. Engaging state-of-the-art green infrastructure and a restored, diverse landscape, the Park has become a living laboratory for urban ecology, healthy living, and sustainability in south Texas.

Williams College – Stetson Plaza

The removal of the old Sawyer Library is a major step in the right direction for Williams College. SSA has been diligently working with the college on this bold move, where landscape is given back to appropriately re-frame the renovated Stetson Library and its long views toward the Green Mountains. This new campus quad will feature local marble from nearby Vermont, crafting it into benches and tables as signature pieces of the Stetson Library entry plaza. The transformation is just beginning!

JULY 2015

Ferrous Park Planting Day

A team from SSA recently ventured out of the office for a day of planting at Ferrous Park in Lawrence, MA. In order to assist the construction phase of this fast paced project, a group of volunteers from Lawrence High School, Groundwork and SSA worked to plant over 4,000 plugs on the newly constructed mound. An exciting day for SSA to see this park taking shape.

August 2015

3 Barns in AD

SSA is proud to be featured in this month’s issue of Architectural Digest in a collaborative project with Ashe + Leandro. The landscape for this residence on Martha ’s Vineyard explores the contrast between the newly constructed three barn structure and it’s indigenous landscape. Constructed edges contain the manicured and programmed areas that are set within restored sand plain meadows and coastal shrublands.

JUNE 2015

SSA Cape Getaway

Now that summer has finally arrived, a small group of our SSA team headed to the Cape for a weekend of revisiting built SSA projects. Projects included both residential and institutional work completed in the early 1990’s to more recently finished projects. A few highlights were the Heritage Museum Flume in Sandwich that received a 2014 BSLA Honor Award, and the Cove House in Woods Hole that also won a 2015 BSLA Honor Award. It was a great weekend of learning, exploring and experiencing SSA’s evolution of timeless landscape design.
